Even though spring break seems like a perfect week of summer adventures, for many high schoolers, it is a time to step back from the plethora of everyday responsibilities we have. After almost three and a half quarters of tests, projects, sports, and extracurriculars, having over a week off school is a blessing many of us need to take advantage of. For everyone looking for time to reset this April, here are some ideas that don’t require too much energy or even leaving your bed!
Speaking of staying in bed, there couldn’t be a better time to catch up on sleep, one of the first things high school students sacrifice when things get stressful. To be sure we are finishing out the year strong, coming back to school with many nights of restful sleep is key to locking in those 4th quarter grades. Another restful activity to prioritize our mental well-being is to take a digital detox and reconnect with nature. During the business of Gym Meet, spring sports, and second semester, I’m sure many of us have found ourselves chronically online. Procrastinating work, doom scrolling before bed, and watching way too many episodes of Gossip Girl at a time are habits we can break and start the season of spring off right.
However, sometimes staying inside isn’t what our body needs… so, it might be time for a vacation! Many families use spring break as a time to take trips and explore new places together, but that doesn’t mean that works for everyone. Trying a new place to eat, going to a new workout class in your town, or visiting a beach or park close by is just as exciting and rejuvenating! Many times, exploring these nearby hidden gems can offer a peaceful escape and new experience for your mind and body!
Finally, spring break can also be used as a time of connection with your friends and family who have all been busy with their own schedules these past couple months as well. Try going to church with your family, not just on Easter Sunday, but another time during Holy Week and have a family dinner after. No matter the size, these moments are what uphold and nurture the relationships we have with our loved ones. You could go to lunch with a friend you haven’t seen in a while or host a group craft night to make embroidered hoodies or paint pottery.
The one person we forgot to mention hanging out with was YOU! During break, be sure to schedule some alone time to reflect on the past winter season and school semester and center yourself in the present moment. Allow yourself to disconnect from anything bothering you and get some relief from your busy schedule.
