2024 has been a year filled with elections. As of right now, 3.4 billion people have voted in various national elections in 67 different countries. By the end of the year, about 440 million more people will have voted. Democracy is being tested this year, and people worldwide are watching America as we move closer to our own presidential election. In a few days, Americans will flood the polls as they vote for either former President Trump or Vice President Harris. According to Statista, 161.42 million people are registered to vote and 49.1% of them are aged between 18 and 24. While the NDP community will play a tiny role in the election, it is important that each and every one of us understands the differences between the candidates so that we may make the best decision, for both ourselves and the nation as a whole. So, let’s take a deep dive into former President Donald Trump’s and Vice President Kamala Harris’s key stances.
Donald J. Trump was the 45th President of the United States of America. His administration may be remembered for the shutdown due to COVID-19 and the events that took place on January 6th. However, as the 2024 Presidential Election approaches, it is time to look at what he has claimed to do for the nation, should he be voted into office once again.
- Immigration – Trump has promised that he will seal the border, in hopes of limiting the number of immigrants who cross into America. He plans on carrying out the largest deportation operation in US history by sending home all illegal immigrants. By doing this, he hopes to put an end to migrant crime gang violence. Trump believes that this will end the increase in drugs that have crossed the borders due to the foreign drug cartels.
- Economy – Former President Trump wants to end inflation and make America affordable again. He plans on doing this by applying large tax cuts to workers’ pay and wants to ensure that there is no tax on tips. Trump has declared that he will protect Social Security and Medicare.
- Climate/Energy – Donald Trump wants to make America the dominant energy producer in the world. He plans on rebuilding the cities to make them safe, clean, and beautiful. He also has said that he will end the electric vehicle mandate.
- Foreign Affairs/Military – With the governments occurring all around the world, Trump has declared that he will prevent World War III by restoring peace to Europe and the Middle East. He also would like to build a great iron dome missile defense shield over entire country which would strength the American military.
- Education – Trump plans on cutting federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, radical gender ideology, and other racial, sexual, or political content that he deems inappropriate on the children. Trump will also deport pro-Hamas radicals in hopes that college campuses would be safer.
- Voting – Trump wants to secure elections by having same day voting, requiring voter identification, using paper ballots, and demanding proof of citizenship.
- Defend – Former President Trump wants to defend the Constitution and Bill of Rights. He wants to put an end to the weaponization of the government against the United States citizens. He hopes that this will unite the country and push it towards a successful future.
Kamala D. Harris is currently the 49th Vice President and is hoping to become the first female President of the United States of America. The Biden-Harris administration has been persevered through problems, such as the Russia-Ukraine War and the Israeli Palestinian Conflict, and the sudden exit from Afghanistan in 2021. Now, with Election Day drawing closer, take a deeper look at the promises that Vice President Harris has made.
- Economy – Vice President Harris wants to build an “opportunity economy” by lowering costs for families. She wants to allow the middle class to grow. To do this, she plans on cutting taxes on middle class families. She wants to make rent and home ownership more attainable and affordable. She has declared that she will grow small businesses, lower the cost of health care, and invest in affordable childcare. Similar to former President Trump, Vice President Harris has stated that she will protect Social Security and Medicare.
- Climate/Energy – Harris wants to ensure that America is playing its part in keeping the Earth healthy. She plans to do this by lowering energy costs and tackling the climate crisis.
- Abortion – Kamala Harris believes women should be allowed to have a choice when it comes to their bodies. She has promised that she will restore and protect reproductive freedoms for all women.
- Gun Violence – America has suffered through too many school shootings over the last year. Vice President Harris is concerned about this uptick in gun violence and wants to make communities safer from gun violence and crime.
- Immigration – Harris has declared that she will secure the American borders. She wants to fix the immigration system and believes that, by doing this, she can put an end to the opioid and fentanyl that is being poured into America.
- Foreign Affairs – Kamala Harris promises to stand with America allies. She has stated that she will stand up to dictators around the world. She wants to lead on the world stage and will ensure that America is country of strength.
- Military – Vice President Harris has stated that she will support military members and families, veterans, caregivers, and all survivors.
Election Day is on November 5th. This year is critical to the fate of America. Both candidates have strong and different beliefs on these various platforms. Understanding where former President Trump and Vice President Harris stand on key issues is extremely important in deciding who will best represent you as the 47th President of the United States of America. For those of you who cannot vote yet, that is okay. However, make sure you understand the impact that each candidate could have on the nation.
