Whether you’re watching the Super Bowl for football, the entertaining commercials, the halftime show, or maybe even Taylor Swift this year, Super Bowl LVIII was filled with excitement. On February 11th, the 49ers and the Chiefs took on the biggest stage in the NFL – the Super Bowl in Las Vegas.
The stage was set with the two remarkable teams ready to face each other in Allegiant Stadium. The San Francisco 49ers earned their place in the Super Bowl after defeating the Detroit Lions 34-31 in the NFC Championship. The Kansas City Chiefs gained their spot after defeating the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 in the AFC Championship.
The game kicked off with a scoreless first quarter, yet the stadium was still buzzing with excitement and team spirit. The 49ers were the first to score with a 55-yard field goal attempt, giving them an early lead of 3-0. With 4 minutes left in the first half of the game, the 49ers furthered their lead with the first touchdown of the game made by #23 Christian McCaffrey. The Chiefs finally put themselves on the score board with less than a minute until halftime with a 28-yard field goal attempt made by #17 Harrison Butker. To close out the first half of Super Bowl LVIII, the 49ers held their lead with a score of 10-3.
If you’re not a huge football fan, then this is the moment you have been waiting for – the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show. This year, Usher was the one to light up the stadium with his hit songs, special guests, and engaging performances. Usher opened his performance with hit songs “Caught Up” and “U Don’t Have to Call” before bringing out his first special guest of the night, Alicia Keys. Other special guests included Jermaine Dupri, H.E.R., and will.i.am, all joining in to give an ecstatic performance. As the show ended, we got to see Usher on roller skates, as well as the phenomenal closing songs “Turn Down For What” and Yeah!” with Ludacris and Lil Jon – all culminating with a celebration of Atlanta, Usher’s hometown.
Following the halftime performance, the 49ers and Chiefs returned to the field to take on the second half of the game. The 3rd quarter proved to be scoreless for the 49ers, but incredibly influential for the Chiefs. The Chiefs scored a field goal and a touchdown to give them their first lead of the game (10-13). Trailing behind going into the 4th quarter, the 49ers scored their last touchdown of the game, giving them a lead of 16-13. Field goals coming from both teams eventually led to a tie of 19-19 at the end of regulation time, forcing the game to go into overtime – the 2nd game in Super Bowl history to go into overtime. Overtime concluded in a thrilling win for the Chiefs and a devastating loss for the 49ers, with a score of 25-22.
Regardless of the outcome, Super Bowl LVIII made for some memorable moments – Travis Kelce yelling at KC Coach Andy Reid, Usher’s halftime performance, Brock Purdy’s Super Bowl debut, and even Taylor Swift in the stands. So whatever your takeaway from this Super Bowl may be, the game proved to be one to remember.
