Living in Maryland, there are tons of ways in which we can give back to our community. One of these ways is to interact one-on-one with members of our own community who may feel hopeless or ostracized because of their situations. There are multiple different organizations both inside Baltimore City and outside, which offer safety and shelter to the homeless or battered. Once such organization is Sarah’s Hope. Sarah’s Hope is an emergency shelter which offers support to homeless women and children. In these shelters women are offered meals, life skills training, parenting classes, health screenings, child and youth services and other activities.
On the St. Vincent DePaul Foundation’s website a success story involving Sarah’s Hope is told. A young woman by the name of Diane became a teenage parent who ultimately ended up completely alone with her baby. Diane was able to take care of the two of them by finding a job. However, after becoming unemployed, she and her baby lost their home. After going through a huge amount of stress and pain, Diane found Sarah’s Hope. Today, with the help of training classes at the shelter, Diane is almost ready to move into a transitional home courtesy of the organization.
Volunteers are always needed at places such as Sarah’s Hope. Ongoing volunteer opportunities at Sarah’s Hope include meal preparation, acting as an after-school tutor, serving meals, hosting baby showers, and running youth activities. Each of these opportunities is crucial in making the women and children’s experience more positive as they try their best to regain their footing.
If you are interested in volunteering at Sarah’s Hope, you can do so at one of two locations. Located in the city, there is the Sarah’s Hope Mount Street location, or in the county at the Sarah’s Hope Hannah More. Feel free to contact Douglas Allers at [email protected] if you have questions or wish to volunteer!
