“Cinderella (Enchanted Edition)” is not your typical Disney story. The cast for the Fall musical includes many more characters than an evil stepmother and Prince Charming. This production, which debuts Friday, November 11, involves a cast of thirty-eight students.
“The huge chorus numbers will be the most challenging!” says Libby Brennan, as the evil stepmother. Arranging nearly thirty people on stage is no easy task.
Unlike the Disney version with Cinderella’s horrid relatives, the Enchanted Edition features quirky, satirical stepsisters. Jamie Watson, who plays stepsister Grace, says, “There’s definitely a lot of physical comedy involved!” Jamie anticipates that the audience will enjoy one of her favorite scenes, where she and Nikki Smith, stepsister Joy, beautify themselves before the ball. Jamie and Nikki, both juniors, will undoubtedly bring humor to the show.
While the stepsisters will have plenty of time to prep for their night out, Cinderella is transformed by her fairy godmother in only a moment. Julia Unitas, as Cinderella, says that what “…will take the longest to perfect is all these costume changes.” In the Disney version, the fairy godmother sings a song and waves her wand, and Cinderella’s simple dress becomes a ball gown. This effect will be much more difficult to execute on stage, but Julia and the rest of the cast believe that with practice, even these challenging scenes will be perfected. The cast and crew are eager for tech week, costume fittings and late night rehearsals before opening night. A small taste of this fairytale will be presented during the play preview on Wednesday, November 9.
