Large and cumulative tests are a common struggle that many students face. However, many turn to late-night study sessions the night before instead of studying ahead. Although it may seem overwhelming, studying earlier allows for the ability to break the material into smaller, more manageable pieces. No matter what your learning style is, there are so many different ways to feel comfortable with the material by the time the test arrives.

For Visual Learners:

  1. Taking handwritten notes filled with color is a great way to digest what you’re learning. Although more tiring, taking handwritten notes has been proven to help students better understand the material. If taking handwritten notes while in class proves to be too challenging, try typing all your notes first, before rewriting them at home.
  2. Making flashcards is also a great way to write and see the material if time is short. Just as with handwritten notes, writing flashcards helps with the repetition of the information, and with repetition comes memorization. Use plenty of colors and organize the information in whatever way makes the most sense to you.
  3. Learning in a quiet space is also normally very helpful for visual learners. When studying, try the library or a quiet space in your house. Make sure to take breaks while studying in order to retain the most information.

For Kinesthetic Learners:

  1. Taking breaks, no matter how short they are, to move around can help give your brain a moment to process what you have learned. It also allows for more focus when it comes time to read the next fact.
  2. Teaching others is a great way to keep studying during a break. Try speaking the information you just learned to a family member or friend nearby. This is a great test of how well you know the material since it is difficult to teach if you do not understand the subject. Use hand gestures and movement if needed to relay the information.
  3. Making flashcards is also a great method for a kinesthetic learner. Writing the information out helps with memorization and retainment. While studying, the act of flipping through the different cards will help keep your brain focused and also keep your hands busy.

For Auditory Learners:

  1. Audio recordings and videos are a great way to study and review the information. For extra practice, try making your own recordings or videos, teaching or reading aloud the needed information. At a later point, look back on these recordings and videos for help with studying or as a last-minute review.
  2. Learning in a quiet space can help hinder distractions while studying. Make sure to select a space that is comfortable. Try to stay away from windows or doors that may serve as a noisy distraction. While in these spaces, try reading the information aloud to yourself, making sure not to disturb anyone else who may be studying.
  3. Studying with others is a great strategy once you understand the material. This method allows each individual a chance to talk and listen to the information needed. Try teaching the material, or simply speaking facts to one another. Focus on putting the material into your own words, instead of simply reading your notes.

Acknowledging and using methods that are right for your learning style is important, however trying a combination of the above suggestions, no matter what learning style they are intended for, can also increase memorization. Select methods based on specific subjects or on how well you know a specific topic. For example, watching a video to understand a unit you did not quite understand while also taking notes combines auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning preferences and allows for maximum learning. Good luck with studying!
