On February 2, 2013, the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) hosted an egg-cting annual event: the Egg Drop!
This competition attracted over 30 teams from NDP’s middle level and other schools. The event was divided into two divisions: Division I (4th and 5th graders) and Division II (7th and 8th graders).
The goal of the competition was to build a contraption that would protect an egg when dropped from a ladder onto a target. In order to win, the egg had to make it to the ground completely intact. A crack in the egg would result in elimination from the winner rankings. The winner was the team with the highest score. This calculated score included factors such as the weight of the device, the length of the device, and the distance the device was from the target. There was also award given for the most creative device.
There was also a surprise engineering challenge during this event. The teams were asked to build a tower of cups while including two tennis balls. The tallest tower received the most points.
As a member of the SNHS, I can definitely say that this year’s egg drop was egg-cellent!
