With the winter season beginning to come to a close, it’s time to do a rerun of some great accomplishments. For three months now, basketball, swimming, squash, and indoor track and field teams have been practicing nonstop to have some of their best seasons.
Varsity basketball had an amazing season. They started the year out going 5-0 in the conference. They bonded as a team, by going to the school play, Beauty and the Beast together. The season continued as the team celebrated Coach Marks’ 200th win in her coaching career. When asked how her season was going, Maci W. ‘25 said, “When you work as a team, you can get anything done!”. She also went on to remind all basketball players to eat before a game, or you may be a little hungry during the game. The varsity basketball season hasn’t ended yet. Make sure to go to one of their games and support your Blazers!
Just inside of the pool, the swim team is destroying this year with an amazing season. Currently, the team is undefeated, with only one dual meet left. Many of the swimmers individually have had great swims with some new best times. Coach Byrd was named the High School Swim Coach of the Year. The Blazer swimmers won the National Catholics Swim Meet, with Shannon C ‘27 winning the 2024 National Catholics Most Outstanding Swimmer Award. Their team started strong and has only grown. They are a force to be reckoned with in the pool. Maisie D ‘25 said, “Swimming is the most rewarding sport and the most fun! Trying to beat your time or achieve a time that will get you into a meet determination that impacts the rest of my life and makes me want to try is the kind of harder in everything I do. Swimming is a very different sport than others, and that is why I love it! I love my teammates, my coaches, everything that comes with amazing sport, and just being able to swim and have an amazing time in the water!”. With few swim meets left, they will continue to fight for their place at the top. Keep going Blazers!
Off-campus, squash has been practicing hard. Under Coach Lynn’s guidance, they had a great season. They had a ton of new girls who made significant improvements under the support of the coaches and teammates. During Senior Day the team was able to bond and come together, celebrating their hardworking seniors. Junior Elisabeth S. ‘25 said, “I have really enjoyed squash because it gives me something to look forward to during the day. I have loved seeing everyone’s improvements and achievements on the squash court.” Though their season is done, the team had a great time bonding and working together.
Finally, Indoor Track and Field had a great time running through the snow, rain, wind, cold, and heat. With a bit of a rocky start due to the closing of the PG County’s Indoor Track, the team was racing at CCBC and Loyola Blakefield. However, this season ended with a bang with several broken records and medals. With records in shot put, Mack D. ‘25, high jump from Sarah S. ‘24, and the 4×200 by Deidre R. ‘25, Shannon P. ‘25, Cammie S. ‘27, and Emmy L. ‘27, and medals in the high jump Sarah S. ‘24, 3200 m by Olivia S. ‘25, and pole vault, Emmi D. ‘25, this season was filled with great memories. Shannon P. ‘25 was asked how her season went and she said, “It was a blast. I had so much fun growing closer to my teammates as we trained. Senior Day was a great time as we celebrated seniors who had led us for years.” The season is not done yet, with one more invitational on February 3rd. Let’s go Blazers!
With these four great sports, have come four great seasons. Congratulations to all athletes and good luck to all of those who aren’t quite done yet. Let’s go Blazers!
