For the past month, the only sport that mattered was soccer. Because I am having post World Cup depression, I’ve decided to write about, obviously, the World Cup. The event is not only fun to watch, but it’s a very important one too. The World Cup started back in 1930, and since then, there hasn’t been a more important event.
Soccer is the number one sport in the whole world. Therefore, it brings all the countries of the world together. It allows people to stop thinking about wars and money and get lost in the sport. Think of it this way, the World Cup is like the Super Bowl of the world. You can imagine how big of an event the Super Bowl would be if football were a international sport.
Well, technically, football is an international sport, if we were talking about soccer. The World Cup also is beneficial economically to the country it’s hosted in. It’s a bonus if the host country wins, because the country gets so much pride! Winning the World Cup is very important to small countries and countries that don’t have much money. Children watch these games hoping to become just like Neymar, Jr. or Messi. Children know they’ll make it one day watching these commercials saying how the soccer players were little boys once too. Maybe one day, we’ll see one of our NDP girls in the Women’s World Cup!
But in the end, the World Cup is not about the economy or politics. It’s mainly about how it brings everyone together. However, you won’t have to wait four years for the next World Cup! The 2015 Women’s World Cup will be hosted in Canada. And remember, follow the games and cheer when your team wins! Enjoy the game!
