With Christmas just a little ways away, people all across the globe are getting into the holiday spirit. Whether they are humming along to Christmas carols in their cars or are just in a better mood than normal, people are looking forward to the holiday with eager anticipation. The houses on 34th Street in Hampden, Maryland are certainly beginning to embrace their holiday spirit.
This Christmas will mark the 66th Anniversary of the decorations of the houses on 34th street or “Christmas streets.” People travel from all around Maryland to see these lights which begin on the 31st of November and carry through the New Year. There is indeed history to this tradition. Bob Hosier is known as the man who started it all, as a teenager he hung a string of lights on a tree in his front yard. Years later he met Darlene Hughes who decorated her house, which happened to be located on 34th street. The two got married and started the tradition on 34th street. A newer tradition can also be found if you travel down to Harbor East. Known as Hot Chocolate Happy Hour, a passerby needs only to look for elves wandering about who will be delivering warm cups of hot chocolate. Hot Chocolate Happy Hour takes place Tuesdays in December from 5:30-7:30. Lastly to ring in the New Year and temporarily distract from any post-Christmas blues, the Baltimore New Year’s Eve Spectacular will take place the 31st beginning at 9 p.m. in the Inner Harbor. These are just a few among many of the holiday treats which Baltimore has to offer!
