Lights dim, curtains open, and suddenly the play begins and the audience is transported into the world of Rick Jacobs, a struggling playwright who is undergoing a bit of writer’s block. “Figments” is about Rick, an ordinary guy who has to go through ordinary struggles such as his meddling mother and the crush on Loni, the girl upstairs who already has a boyfriend. This play takes an ordinary situation and makes it extraordinary through the use of characters that only exist in Rick’s mind. Rick has some imaginary friends that only he and the audience can see and hear. We meet characters that are in Rick’s murder mystery play and the unrealistic perceptions of him, his mother, Loni, and his deceased father that his mother carries around in an urn. The characters of Rick’s murder mystery come alive and actually act out the scene that Rick is putting into his play. Each time they do the scene, it changes a little bit. Sometimes the actors have a different accent or just an overall different attitude. All of the actors in the play make the characters come to life.
The play is also extremely funny. There are never five minutes that go by without laughing. Jamie Watson, who plays Rick’s mother, steals the show with her trying to take over her son’s life and “of course” her prunes. All the jokes are witty and are slipped into the dialogue flawlessly. All in all the actors did an amazing job with this play. They used various accents, and took what is a seemingly complicated plot and turned it into something the audience could understand. The actors made the play excellent. “Figments” was definitely a must-see.
