I’m pretty sure you know who I’m talking about just from the title, right? Okay, well, just in case you’ve been living in a cave this whole summer, I’ll introduce you to this new and awesome artist.
Carly Rae Jepsen is a 26-year-old singer from Canada. She was a cast off from Canadian Idol until Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, signed her for School Boy Records. Since then, she’s been a hit-literally! In September of 2011, she released her single, “Call Me Maybe.” It was an instant success, and topped charts in the UK, Canada, the US, and other countries around the world! Billboard named it the top, “Song of the Summer,” defeating some impressive competition like, “Starships,” “We Are Young,” and “Payphone.”
Her song is perhaps one of the most parodied of all time too. Everyone from the Harvard baseball team, to Justin Bieber, to the US Olympic swim team has done their own take on, “Call Me Maybe.” The song was ridiculously overplayed on every radio station (and still is), yet people loved it! What is it about this song that makes it so darn catchy? Maybe it’s the great beat, the fun lyrics, or perhaps it’s just because of Carly’s adorable looks and personality. Whatever it is though, Carly certainly found a way into the hearts- and heads and mouths- of America!
After that, she worked with Owl City to create another great and enjoyable single called, “Good Time.” While not as popular as “Call Me Maybe,” “Good Time,” has enjoyed some popularity; this may be due simply to the fact that Carly Rae Jepsen sings it.
To follow up on her recent single success, she just released a new album, titled, “Kiss.” The album contains 12 songs, including, “Call Me Maybe,” and “Good Time.” Some articles I’ve read regarding her have asked, “how does one improve on perfection?” Anxious fans having been waiting to hear more from her and to see if she has the potential to be more than just another, “One Hit Wonder.”
I listened to most of the songs on the album and have reached my own conclusion. While all of the new songs are pretty good, I don’t think they can compare to, “Call Me Maybe.” Her voice is synthesized quite a bit in several of the songs, which I wasn’t always too fond of. After a time too, the tracks started to sound very similar. Unfortunately, the album does not contain a great deal of variety, although the songs are quality ones.
In my opinion, I do like the new album, but I wish they mixed her voice less, and I would have enjoyed hearing some different kind of music from her. Overall though, Carly is a great, new, and young female artist that you should definitely check out if you haven’t already.
