1. Edward and Bella are in love. Where some people see a stalker in Edward, what is actually there is true love, compassion and dedication. If a guy you were dating told you “You were his life now” or “I hate you for making me want you so much,” would you be creeped out? I didn’t think so. It is romantic. Edward is obviously saying this to Bella because he wants to marry her, and he loves her. Although the word hate should never be used against someone you love, it is used in a vague sense meaning that he is extremely attracted to her and wants to always be with her. It is meant in a romantic way, not a creepy way. What about if you came home from school, and the guy you were crushing on was in your room? Would you be creeped out? Of course not, because you wouldn’t even be thinking to yourself how he got in there, how he knew where you lived, etc., you would just be thrilled that he was there just like Bella is.
Edward is essentially the perfect boyfriend. He surprises her, protects her, makes her feel beautiful and loved and does not pressure her into situations she is uncomfortable with as he is very “traditional.” There is nothing wrong with eighteen year olds getting married when they are in love, and Edward and Bella most certainly are. Bella is not in an abusive relationship as Edward cares for her and her protection more than anything. Therefore, it makes no sense that he is abusive. Bella is quoted, “I am unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him” because she truly loves him back. The love these two share eventually leads to their wedding where I love you’s are exchanged as well. Bella and Edward’s wedding is one of the most beautiful, emotional and heart felt marriages of all time as their already present unity is finally confirmed.
2. Edward keeps Bella safe. Edward always wants to ensure Bella’s safety. He would die for her and that is another factor that makes their relationship so adorable and special. Anyone who sees these types of characteristics as creepy or stalkerish has never been in love or simply does not realize how adorable Edward and Bella are as a couple. Edward is right in not liking Bella to spend time with Jacob because she could get hurt with him, and every time she talks to him, he tries to kiss her and take her away from Edward. The one time Bella does get hurt in “Twilight,” Edward is right there in the hospital when she wakes up. He is always there for her and makes her feel secure. Security not only in the physical sense, but also in the emotional sense as well.
3. Acceptance is a key virtue in the Twilight Saga. Edward is a vampire and is classified as a non-human who has no soul and is therefore unaccepted by human society. Bella, on the other hand, is a clumsy, average person. Both fear not being accepted by others and judge themselves harshly, but at the end of the day, they accept each other and do not expect anything more from each other. The love that Edward feels towards Bella humanizes him in a way that would otherwise not be captured. It is important to be accepted as an individual and to not pressure the people you love into doing things they don’t want to do. Edward and Bella are the perfect example. Acceptance surrounds the Twilight Saga and is a reoccurring moral throughout. Jacob also accepts Renesme even though she is a different species than he, which also promotes diversity in “Twilight.” Another moral virtue of “Twilight” is displaying abstinence until marriage.
4. Symbolism is used to make the Twilight Saga a great piece of literature. What time of symbolism you ask? Symbolism of connection, love and impact. The apple, for instance, is a widely known and mysterious symbol of the Twilight Saga and is on the cover of the first book for a reason. An apple is a symbol of a forbidden fruit and mystery. Bella is the apple that is forbidden to be taken by Edward as she is mortal, and he is a vampire. When Bella has an apple at lunch, she drops it, and it falls into the welcoming hands of Edward. This is a premonition of their future bond of love to be shared as Edward receives the fruit with open hands when Bella drops it. Animals are also a common symbol as quoted, “Like the lion who fell in love with the lamb.” Edward is the lion, and Bella is the lamb. Normally, a lion would consume a lamb as a meal as a vampire would a human, but their love is so strong that they are able to overcome this obstacle because their love is so strong. Bella is also paralleled to the ugly duckling as her last name is swan. Finding Edward helps to bring out her “swanliness,” as she blossoms when he is around. All great works of literature have symbols, and “Twilight” is full of them.
5. There are attractive guys running around. Don’t even try to say you don’t think anyone in the movie is attractive, and even if you don’t, you cannot tell me that you can refrain from staring at Jacob, who is out of this world. All of the werewolves are tan and beautiful. Edward, while he has a hard time keeping up with Jacob, is still extremely attractive and the attentiveness he displays to Bella makes him even cuter. Plus Edward sparkles…..enough said, everyone loves sparkles.
If you are not a fan of the Twilight Saga, then I don’t really know what to say to you except that you do not have a heart and don’t appreciate romance and hot guys.
