Social Distancing: an Introvert’s Dream

Emily Thomas

Reading is the perfect activity during our time of social distancing!

Okay, so I have to admit: even as an introvert, I miss interactions with my friends and hanging out with them at lunch. But overall, I’m not doing too bad. I’m finally tackling that tower of books that I never had time to read before. Yes, I am not afraid to admit that I’m reading five different books at one time!

I really enjoy having extra time with the new schedule to sleep, read, and participate in other activities that I enjoy. Even though most things have been canceled for the next few months, transporting myself to the adventures of The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis or reading about the history of “The Land of Fields” in Poland by James A. Michener gives me something to do and gets my mind off being stuck inside.

As a person who gave up social media for Lent, I was terrified that I would find myself feeling extremely isolated during our time away from school. However, my books (and texting my friends) have been giving me something much more productive to do.

Junior Clarisse Dapul is also an introvert, and agrees that reading is a great way to pass the time. “I’ve read The Hazel Wood, The Night Country, and Flat Out Love. I’ve loved all of them!” she told me via iMessage. Clarisse has also been passing the time by watching TV (mostly Disney Plus and Food Network), listening to music, and even getting driving hours in!

Now you may be thinking what a nerd I am, but I challenge each of you to pick up a book during these next few weeks and see the magic happen!
