For most of us teenage girls, fall is the epitome of fashion. All of us, and you are lying if you say otherwise, are sadly reflecting on our summer memories. But, suddenly we feel that cold, fall chill, and our closets are turned inside out looking for our hidden wintry clothes. Fall clothes usually include jeans, sweaters, flannels, sweatshirts, graphic tees, boots, etc. Yes, these are great pieces to own, but what I see is a lack of fashion sense. Not one girl I know enjoys walking into a room and seeing someone else wearing her exact outfit because the latest issue of Seventeen had complete outfit descriptions. It’s a horrible feeling. So, I’m here to give you advice about how you can take these essential pieces and make them your very own.
1. DO NOT be afraid to wear colored jeans.
For some odd reason, many girls feel that it is odd to wear colored jeans, but quite frankly, they can completely make an outfit. One pop of color can take a seemingly “blah” outfit and turn it into a lovely ensemble. Of course, your jeans do not need to be bright yellow or highlighter pink, but fall colors such as maroon (a big color for fall 2013), brown, evergreen, navy, and mustard yellow can give any outfit a sense of fall warmth.
2. Never be against DIYs.
DIY, or do it yourself, may seem daunting, but it gives you the ability to make anything your own, literally. There are tons of ways to DIY, just search YouTube and Pinterest, and you’ll find step by step instructions for almost any piece of clothing. A few examples are jeans can be distressed, and flannels can be easily bleached to add a worn look. You can also make your own graphic tees using old, plain-colored tee shirts and adding decals of brands, movies, bands, etc. These tasks may be for the more experienced, but I promise with a little practice, you’ll be up to par.
3. Search your mother’s/ sister’s/cousin’s closet.
With permission, of course, tear through the jungle that is this relative’s closet. Most likely, she will have amazing shirts and sweaters that will be one of a kind because they were probably purchased in the late 90s and early 00s. Do not let that sway you. This is also a bonus because I highly doubt your family members will make you pay for their old and unwanted clothing.
4. Go into boutiques and side shops.
These are actual fashion heavens. Most boutiques and side shops have clothing from independent companies, so unless every girl regularly shops in these stores, you will have one of a kind pieces that will be quite hard to find elsewhere.
