Music Monthly: Back to School Edition

Camille Arreza, Staff Writer

Welcome back to school, everyone!  I know this isn’t how any of us imagined it would be like, but let’s just try to make the most of it.

I’ve compiled a list of ten songs that accurately describe my moods for virtual/hybrid learning.  Judging by the names of some songs or the lyrics, I think you can guess how I feel as I walk you through my day.

1. “Dark Red” — Steve Lacy

“Something bad is ’bout to happen to me.  I don’t know what, but I feel it coming.”

Good morning.  We’re going to start off with some Steve Lacy.  This funky, R&B song is actually about a girl, but I think that some lyrics can apply to other situations.

2. “Breathe (In the Air)” — Pink Floyd

“Breathe, breathe in the air.  Don’t be afraid to care.”

Take this song to heart.  Relax.  Give yourself time to process and digest everything.  Take a break from the hustle and bustle of life and just “Breathe.”

3. “Cooks” — Still Woozy

“Well, you know, I’ve never really done this.  No way.  Well, I know you really haven’t either – so what?  Can’t tell you why.”

I think we can all agree that this is unfamiliar territory.  Have patience with everyone; we’re all in the same boat.

4. “1 4 2” — Inner Wave

“I’ve got a problem.  I don’t know what to do.”

Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  If you’re lost, chances are someone else is, too.  Try to find the courage to speak up; it’ll help you in the long run.

5.  “That’s All for Now” — Beach Fossils

“It’s new regret. Isn’t it funny how we forget.  It’s too late for that.  You’re off on your own…Keep moving on.”

This song reminds me of my responsibilities.  We’re all older and have more on our plates, so it’s important to keep that balance.  Try to stay on top of things!

6. “Goodbye Weekend” — Mac Demarco

“If you don’t agree with the things that go on within my life, well, honey, that’s fine just know that you’re wasting your time.”

The name for this song is quite relatable regarding school, but the meaning is deeper.  Demarco expresses his rejection of advice from people who think he is wasting his time in this song.  Live like Demarco and bet on yourself.

7. “Talking Backwards” — Real Estate

“And I might as well be talking backwards.  Am I making any sense to you?”

Simple miscommunication can derail an entire day.  Make sure to speak up if you’re having trouble.  Remember: communication is key.

8. “Better” — Maggie Rogers

“Sick of the silence, but I’ll be somewhere new by dawn.”

Maggie Rogers is an Easton, MD, native.  Her coastal roots are shown throughout her music.  Take some time away from technology to explore “Mini America” sometime.

9. “Giving Up” — Whitney

“Tears are falling one by one.  I can feel you giving up.”

As temping as it is, stay strong!  We are making history right here, right now.  Stick with it; we all believe in you.

10. “We’ve Only Just Begun” — Carpenters

“And when the evening comes, we smile.  So much of life ahead.  We’ll find a place where there’s room to grow.  And yes, we’ve just begun.”

This 70s classic will swoon you to sleep.  The beautiful words of encouragement and possibility will help you get through the rest of your week.

I hope that these songs resonate with you, or give you hope for the oncoming year.  They’ve gotten me through some tough times.  I wish you luck on the journey ahead; you got this!
