A couple weeks ago, I got in my car, put on my seatbelt, and without a second thought, turned on the radio. It’s almost second-nature for a lot of us. No matter what kind of music you prefer, there is always a radio station for it. From pop to alternative to jazz to country…the genres are endless. But on this specific morning, I heard a couple songs that immediately were stuck in my head. These songs are “Royals” by Lorde, “Hold On We’re Going Home” by Drake, and “Mirrors” by Justin Timberlake.
I’m sure most of you readers have heard “Royals” by now. Its catchy rhythm and harmonies to sing along to are constantly playing on the radio. I was immediately hooked on this song, and I listen to it at least once a day. I did some research on this artist who likes to go by Lorde, and her real name is Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor. (Quite the tongue-twister, huh?) She is only 16 years old and has made quite the debut into the music industry with her hit, “Royals.” She is from New Zealand and has a boatload of talent for such a young artist. She has an EP and new album out now, which I highly recommend checking out! Her electro-pop songs are constantly playing in my head. On the iTunes top 100 chart, her second most popular song is called “Team.” Lorde has been named the breakout artist of 2013!
The next artist whose hit “Hold On We’re Going Home” has been around for a few years and recently received his first Grammy. You may know him as Wheelchair Jimmy from his days on the TeenNick show Degrassi, but most know him as Drake. He is one of the most popular hip-hop/rap artists of the generation. His latest song features Majid Jordan. It’s a slower song that you can’t help but sing along to or replay on your iPhone. Drake also recently released his new album, Nothing Was The Same, on September 24th. It’s a must-have album for you hip-hop and rap lovers out there.
The final artist I’d like to focus on is an artist who has been around since he was in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with other artists such as Britney Spears, Ryan Gosling, and Christina Aguilera. His name is Justin Timberlake. His latest album, The 20/20 Experience, has been in the top 20 on iTunes since its release date. His songs, “Suit and Tie” and “Mirrors,” have been some of the top radio hits of the summer. “Mirrors,” however, has been played more than “Suit and Tie” as of late. His new album is great for pop lovers. Even if you don’t like pop, there’s a song in it for everyone. These three artists have made quite the statement with their radio-play in the last few weeks (and if you’re Justin Timberlake, the past few months). There are many other talented artists whose songs have made their debut this year, but in the past six weeks, “Royals,” “Mirrors,” and “Hold On We’re Going Home” have been the top hits.
