It’s October 22, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. The band and orchestra rooms are filled with high school girls, eating and giggling with each other, complaining about the songs they don’t like and raving about the ones they love. The bathrooms are filled with seniors and freshmen alike, applying mascara and humming the most beloved tunes to themselves. The halls are abuzz with questions such as, “Can I borrow a tuner?” “Can you see my tank top under my dress?” “Where do you want to go for food after this is over?” Every musician at NDP knows what that means- it’s concert time at Notre Dame!
NDP’s first fall concert was instituted this year to allow parents to hear the music their daughters had performed during Open House. Since the Open House is such a crazy (but exciting) day, parents did not have the opportunity to hear their children, and the NDP Music Department rose to the occasion, providing a wonderful evening for both prospective and current family and friends.
Amanda Abraham ’14, the Tri-M Music Honor Society president, welcomed all to the event, and with that, a night of delightful music began. Among the favorites of the concert band’s performance were medleys from Harry Potter and Les Miserables. The audience loved the orchestra’s version of “Danse Macabre,” complete with Halloween masks, and the choir impressed all with their rendition of the somewhat comical “Mashed Potatoes/Love Poem.”
Overall, the concert was a great success. All were entranced by the music and appreciated the amount of work that went into the concert. All musicians behaved professionally, even when the lights glitched in the middle of the orchestral performance. The girls played exceptionally well and congratulated each other after the performance. It truly was a magical evening.
