Our featured artist for the week of December 4th is Jenna Schueler. Check out the Q&A below to find why art is more than just her hobby.
At what age did you develop an interest in art?
I’ve been interested in art for as long as I can remember. I had a really great teacher in elementary school who inspired me.
Which art classes have you taken at NDP?
I’ve taken Art I, Art II and Art III, and this year I am in AP Art Studio.
What is your favorite medium to use in your art?
My favorite medium would probably be charcoal. I love getting my hands messy when I draw. There is something very satisfying about it.
Do you consider art more than a hobby?
Art is more than a hobby for me. It’s the way I express myself. When I am stressed, it is one of the best ways that I find to calm myself down and relax.
Is there a specific artist whose work inspires you?
An artist who really inspires me is Cezanne. I saw some of his work at the BMA, and I love how he captures color in his work.
What is your favorite piece that you have created so far in high school?
My favorite piece that I’ve created is probably this pastel self-portrait I did of myself last year. I had fun stretching and playing with the color.
How would you advise another student discovering her artistic talents?
My advice to the artists out there is to take risks and try new things. Also, don’t get upset if you mess up or things don’t turn out how you planned. You can transform any “mistake” into something beautiful.
